Encinitas, California’s Maddie Stanton (USA) took over opening day proceedings with a solid performance in the peaky conditions. The 14-year-old’s forehand attack overpowered the sections on offer to accrue an 10.17 heat total. A once Super Girl Surf Pro bystander, Stanton now looks to make her mark on the top-seeded Round of 64.
Congratulations to MADDIE STANTON (@maddiestantonsurf ) for being named Surfer of the Week for the week of October 29th. It was an Octoberfest of events for the 15-year-old from Encinitas where she was competing in contests up and down the coast. Kicking the month off at the 23/24 Southwest Explorer Season opener doubleheader at Ponto, Maddie placed 2nd in the Womens at both events. The following weekend she made the trek north to Santa Cruz for the Northwest Open Season opening weekend taking the win in the Girls U16 in pumping surf at Pleasure Point and 3rd place at the Hook. Next up, she got the jersey back on at the Oceanside Open in firing conditions taking the dub in the Open Girls and 4th in the Open Womens.

“There’s a lot of current, so it’s hard to stay in the same spot and get a good one. But once you get a good one — and when a big one’s coming toward you — you can launch super high. I’d get one going out, and sit out for a bit and catch one going in and launch off the backwash.”
